Distinctives

SOMA exists because the Bible calls all believers to be equipped and to serve Christ in the world and in their own churches (Ephesians 4:11-16). Embracing a unique set of distinctives, SOMA aims to be:

  • God-centered
  • Jesus-focused
  • Gospel-driven
  • Spirit-led
  • Kingdom-minded, and
  • Action-oriented

This means we believe that personal transformation occurs through a deepening awareness and application of the gospel. Our goal is not simply information transfer, but heart transformation. This transformation includes the entire person:

  • Head: growing in understanding of Christ
  • Heart: growing in affection for Christ
  • Hands: growing in service to Christ

We also strongly believe that ministry training cannot and should not take place solely in the classroom. Practical application, character development, spiritual formation, and ministry training all require personal relationships and real life experiences. As a result, SOMA requires students to meet with a pastor or mentor in their local church on a regular basis to assist in applying truth to life and ministry in their church.
